(Franchesco, Francisco, Francois, Franz) [1506-1552], one of the founders of the Society of Jesus and heroic missionary to the Far East. Living among those to whom he came to preach the Gospel and adopting their language and customs, he suffered much from the opposition of European officials. He is patron of all foreign missionaries, those who must live among strangers and of Borneo, India, Outer Mongolia and Pakistan. His feast is December 3.
