In the early 20th century, Arabica coffee was introduced to Western Uganda on the slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains. The region’s altitude (between 1500m and 2000m), favorable climate conditions, and evenly distributed soil richness create an ideal environment for Arabica growth and satisfying production. Coffee farming attracted more mountain farmers, significantly improving their livelihoods through crop income. During the 2000s, the coffee market shifted toward quality, giving rise to the “Specialty coffee” segment. Consumers now seek high-quality products with specific flavor profiles, and Rwenzori coffee has found its place in this specialty market. Farmers are motivated to maintain excellent production standards.
Cafe Suavecito partners with Vista Bean to bring you this wonderful coffee. Vista Bean has formed a direct trade partnership with farmers in Uganda to promote transparency, accountability, sustainability, and social justice.
Their farming affiliates are registered and provided with a unique ID number, allowing for the traceability of each coffee batch to its farm of origin. Additionally, two-thirds of these partners are women, endowed with the skills necessary for self-reliance and progressive thinking, contributing to an enhanced quality of life.
Uganda is an extremely diverse country which hosts the largest refugee population in Africa. It is also one of the largest impoverished populations with over 18mil people living on less than $1.90 USD per day, while almost half of all children do not complete a primary education. Paying a respectable price to farming partners will allow them to reinvest and grow their production potential and yields.
